SEIU Healthcare Indigenous Internship Program (SIIP)

Introducing our SEIU Healthcare Indigenous Internship Program (SIIP), a paid 12-month internship in our Organizing Department designed to build skills in union organizing, membership engagement, and leadership development while fighting for workers.

SIIP is part of our ongoing commitment to build respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities through career development, mentorship, and recognition of Indigenous perspectives.

Do you know a young, Indigenous person (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) aged 18 to 30, passionate about social justice and labour rights? Is that someone you?

You or Someone You Know Should:

  • Self-identify as Indigenous (FirstNations, Inuit, or Métis)
  • Be eligible to work in Canada
  • Be between the ages of 18 – 30 years
  • Have experience or familiarity with unions, organizing, political science, social work, labour and community organizing, activism, or related fields

What You’ll Learn:

  • Workplace Organizing – Identifying and engaging workers in non-unionized and unionized workplaces to educate, recruit, and mobilize them in union activities

  • Member Engagement & Leadership Development – Strengthening union membership by training and empowering workers to become leaders within their workplace

  • Collective Bargaining Support – Assisting in contract negotiations, preparing demands, gathering worker feedback, and mobilizing for fair agreements

  • Advocacy & Campaigns – Leading workplace, legislative, and political campaigns that promote workers’ rights and union values

  • Conflict Resolution & Grievance Handling – Supporting members in addressing workplace concerns and filing grievances in accordance with collective agreements
