SEIU Healthcare has been awarded the 2021 Bromley Lloyd Armstrong Award from the Equity Committee of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council.
We received the award in recognition of the strides we have made in exemplifying the labour movement value of promoting and demonstrating an organizational commitment to equity, human rights, and inclusion.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, SEIU Healthcare had been a strong voice in protecting healthcare workers, and raised the concern about the pandemic disproportionately affecting women and racially marginalized communities,” says TYR Labour Council.
“They urged the government to develop guidelines that keep healthcare workers safe and give workers appropriate PPE. SEIU Healthcare also petitioned the government to introduce pandemic pay to recognize healthcare workers for their essential contributions in battling the virus.”
Bromley Lloyd Armstrong was a Black trade unionist, community organizer, and activist. He was a pivotal figure in the early anti-discrimination campaigns in Ontario that led to Canada’s first anti-discrimination laws.
The TYR Labour Council established the prestigious award in 2004 to commemorate the courage, dedication, and outstanding service of Armstrong to the labour and human rights movements in Canada.
