Learn More About The PSW Tax Credit

1. Who Qualifies

You may be eligible if you:

  • Work as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) for an eligible health care establishment, such as a hospital, nursing care facility, residential care facility, community care facility for the elderly, home health care establishment, or similar regulated health care establishment.
  • Ordinarily provide one-on-one care and essential support to another person.
  • Help patients with activities of daily living and mobilization, such as eating, bathing, dressing, personal care or moving safely.
  • Provide care consistent with the person’s health care needs, as directed by a regulated health care professional or provincial or community health organization.

Your job title alone does not determine eligibility. Your actual duties and workplace must meet the federal eligibility requirements.

2. How Much Can You Get?

You can receive the lesser of:

  • $1,100, or
  • 5% of your eligible PSW earnings

3. When Does It Start?

The Personal Support Workers Tax Credit applies to the 2026 through 2030 tax years.

That means the first claims will be made when PSWs file their 2026 tax returns in 2027.

4. What Do You Need From Your Employer?

Your employer must certify your eligible earnings.

This will be reported through a new “other information” code on your T4.

Keep your T4 for your tax records.

5. How Do You Claim It?

When you file your tax return:

  1. File your normal income tax return.
  2. Claim the Personal Support Workers Tax Credit.
  3. Your employer will have reported your eligible earnings through your T4.
  4. The credit will be calculated based on 5% of your eligible earnings, up to a maximum of $1,100.

You must file a tax return to claim the credit.

The PSW Tax Credit is refundable, meaning eligible PSWs can receive the credit even if they have little or no federal income tax owing.

6. The Bottom Line

If you’re an eligible PSW in Ontario, you could receive up to $1,100 every year from 2026 through 2030.

That’s up to $5,500 over five years.
