On August 23, 2018, almost 100 SEIU Healthcare members, their children, and volunteer staff gathered at Glen Haffy Conservation Area in Caledon, Ont., for the 8th annual Rob West Take a Kid Fishing Day.
On the sunny day, SEIU Healthcare members’ children were taught how to fish and they all tried their luck at the lake. One fortunate child caught a trout and won the first-place trophy. Many others were surprised to reel out crayfish.
Participants played numerous outdoor games together, including tug-of-war, soccer, volleyball, and bean bag toss. The children also painted messages of support and gratitude to the West family.
The group enjoyed hot dogs and burgers for lunch and fresh peaches for dessert. The children went home with presents, a toy fishing rod to hone their skills, and lasting memories.
The event is held annually in honour of deceased SEIU Healthcare Union Representative Rob West who was an avid fisher. The day is fully-funded through generous donations.
