COVID-19 Update – March 17

March 17, 2020 Angelica Cruz

As you may have heard, today the Ontario government declared a state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What this means is that extended precautions are being put into place to protect you, your families and community. We want you to remain calm and confident that this declaration is the right decision and will aide in the containment of the virus.

Effective immediately, the province has ordered the additional closures of all facilities providing indoor recreation programs, all public libraries, all private schools, all licensed childcare centres, all theatres, cinemas and concert venues, and all bars and restaurants except to provide takeout food and delivery.

This also bans public events of over 50 people, including parades, events and services within places of worship until March 31.

While we are encouraged by the steps the government has taken to limit the spread of COVID-19, we continue to have discussions at all levels about the economic impact this pandemic is having on frontline workers. While the job-protected leave legislation announced on Monday is a positive first-step, we are urging the government to make sure those on leave are also compensated appropriately. We continue to work directly with your Employers to address issues of compensation.

Through this difficult time, we want to assure you that we remain operational, here for you and committed to supporting our more than 60,000 frontline members who are facing the COVID-19 pandemic firsthand every day. We can’t thank you enough for your incredible dedication to your patients, clients and residents. We acknowledge the risks you are taking by working on the frontlines of this pandemic, and recognize the strength that comes along with that. We are proud to continue to fight on your behalf.

While all of our SEIU Healthcare offices remain open, in the interest of your health and safety, we are asking members not to visit any of our offices. Please call your Member Resource Centre at 1-877-672-7348 for all inquiries. The MRC is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but please note, the MRC will be closed from 3:00 p.m. today and will re-open at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

As a reminder, we have created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to help support you through the COVID-19 pandemic. To access our FAQ, please click here.

We also continue to build a list of resources that you can find below.

Please note these resources are updated frequently as the Government and Public Health Agencies continue to make recommendations, so please keep checking back.

Thank you again for your resilience and dedication during this difficult time. We remain committed to ensuring you are protected, both medically and financially, and will continue to update you in the coming days and weeks.
