On Thursday, April 25, more than 50 SEIU Healthcare members, staff, and community supporters rallied outside of Bluewater Health in Sarnia to demand the hospital complete its pay equity plan.
SEIU Healthcare has been trying to negotiate a pay equity plan with Bluewater Health for more than a decade. Bluewater must post a pay equity plan to meet the requirements of the Pay Equity Act, an important piece of legislation that aims to eliminate systemic gender discrimination in compensation for female dominated work.
Bluewater Health has used stall tactics, cancelled meetings, and even claimed impasse while refusing to negotiate with SEIU Healthcare. We have filed for an application for Review Services with the Pay Equity Commission. We have requested the support of a Review Officer in completing the final steps of the pay equity process. This approach was taken as a last resort to finally complete this long overdue pay equity process.
