Over 200 SEIU Healthcare members, the majority being members who have never attended before, joined us at the third annual Summer Academy from Monday, August 19 to Friday to August 23 at the Westin Prince Hotel. We have now had over 1,000 members graduate from our Leadership Academy program and it was our goal to ensure that this year we welcomed many new members to the program.
The Academy had a jam-packed schedule filled with education sessions, networking events, interactive activities, and entertainment. Orlando Bowen, a linebacker in the Canadian Football League and motivational speaker, and Jill Hewlett, a brain fitness expert, delivered uplifting presentations to kick-off the program.
During the week members learned about mental health awareness, facing management, and organizing in the workplace. The purpose of our Leadership Academy program is to create strong leaders in the workplace, encourage political activism, and support each other as we push for change! At the end of the week, we saw that members left feeling more confident, empowered, and educated. Each member new or old to the Leadership Academy left learning something new, meeting someone new, or leaving wanting to try something new in their communities and their workplaces.
